Arc I · Threshold · Chapter Six

Sealed

Stated rules. Issued once, to all candidates, without amendment.

An hour after the numbers, they were finally told what this was.

There was no stage and nobody came out to speak. The voice was simply in the hall, at a normal volume, the way a voice is in a room with you. It was flat and unhurried and it did not sound like a person.

The hall stopped talking.

sat down on the floor, because his legs had been going for a long time and because he had a feeling this was going to be the important part. stayed standing. Most people stayed standing.

Trial address · stated rules

CANDIDATES ARE ADDRESSED ONCE. THIS ADDRESS IS NOT REPEATED, NOT AMENDED, AND NOT EXPLAINED.

NINETEEN DAYS AGO A DEVICE ON YOUR WORLD REMOVED ELEVEN PHOTONS FROM UNOCCUPIED SPACE. THIS CONSTITUTES ANNOUNCEMENT. ANNOUNCEMENT IS NOT VOLUNTARY AND CANNOT BE WITHDRAWN.

YOUR SPECIES IS UNDER ASSESSMENT. ASSESSMENT HAS BEGUN.

9,812 CANDIDATES SELECTED. SELECTION CRITERIA ARE NOT DISCLOSED AND WILL NOT BE DISCLOSED ON REQUEST.

TWELVE WORLDS. EACH MEASURES A DIFFERENT CAPACITY. CANDIDATES ARE NOT INFORMED WHICH, BEFORE OR AFTER.

CANDIDATES WHO DIE ARE DEAD.

FINAL MEASUREMENTS ARE SUMMED ACROSS THE COHORT AND COMPARED AGAINST A FIXED THRESHOLD. THE THRESHOLD IS NOT DISCLOSED AND IS NOT ADJUSTED.

ABOVE THRESHOLD: YOUR SPECIES IS ADMITTED.

BELOW THRESHOLD: YOUR WORLD IS SEALED.

THIS OFFICE DOES NOT NOTIFY HOME WORLDS OF EITHER OUTCOME.

, on the floor, went very still.

The voice added one thing the address itself had not. This had happened before, in other places. It is how a species announces itself, whether it means to or not.

Around him the hall was doing its own arithmetic. He could hear it — small shiftings, somebody repeating twelve to nobody in particular. A woman asked what happens if we refuse, and got no answer, because there was nothing anywhere to refuse to. The voice did not slow down for any of it.

Candidates who die are dead. It said that in the same tone as everything else, between two other sentences, and did not come back to it.

At the end, it said, the cohort would be added up.

Not each of them. All of them. Every candidate's final measurements would be summed into one number for the species, and that number would be compared to another number, which already existed and had existed for a very long time.

If the total was above it, humanity would be admitted.

Admitted meant contact. It meant a place among the civilizations that had already crossed this line, and access to what they had and what they knew, which the voice described as effectively without limit.

It spent four sentences on this and none of them were persuasive. It was not selling anything.

If the total was below it, their world would be Sealed.

Sealed was not destruction.

The voice was clear about that, and it took its time, and it was the only part of the whole address that would have said was careful.

Nothing on Earth would be harmed. No one would be killed. The planet would be enclosed — a boundary, permanent, with nothing crossing it in either direction for the rest of the time the planet existed. No signal in. No signal out. No contact, ever, with anything.

Life would continue. It would simply continue alone.

And then the sentence that took the hall apart.

This office does not notify home worlds of either outcome.

Earth would not be told that it had been assessed. It would not be told that it had failed. If it was Sealed, it would go on exactly as it was, in a universe that had simply gone quiet, and it would never know the difference.

thought about his sister's kitchen.

He thought about it very specifically. The envelope under the magnet with the furnace filter size on it. The container with the blue lid. standing in the door with a dish towel over her shoulder saying bring it back, and him saying I will.

If they failed, she would never find out. She would file a police report and it would go nowhere. She would spend years deciding what had happened to him, and every version she came up with would be wrong.

She would live out a whole life on a sealed planet, and nobody would ever tell her that her brother had gone somewhere.

If they succeeded, the world would change. He did not know how and neither did anybody else in that hall, but a planet admitted to something does not stay quiet about it for long. Denise would find out, eventually, that the universe had company in it.

She would not find out that her brother had been any part of the reason.

This office does not notify home worlds. It had said office. It had not said nobody, and it had not said never, and Ellis noticed the difference and put it away somewhere to look at later.

Either way, she does not get him back. Either way, nobody tells her where he went.

He sat on the floor of the hall and worked all the way through that, and did not stand up, and did not stop listening.

Then it told them what was being measured, and named six things.

Body, which was strength and endurance and how much pain a person could work through. Combat, which was applied violence — reflex, timing, weapon handling, and the willingness to commit before you were sure. Cognition, which was how fast you could hold a new thing in your head and turn it over. Strategy, which was foresight: reading a system, or a room, or a person, and moving one step earlier than you had to. Nerve, which was resistance to fear, to pain, to coercion and to despair.

Then it named a sixth, which was Resonance.

It did not define Resonance. It said Resonance would explain itself.

matched them one at a time against the six short words he had been shown an hour earlier and had not understood, and found that five of them fitted.

The scores were added together.

had been turning that one over since the voice said it, as he would a claim with a number in the wrong column.

They had just been told they were being assessed, and every one of them had heard it as a competition. Of course they had. Every one of them had spent a life in competitions, and they had spent the last hour ranking themselves in a room with nothing else to do.

It was not a competition. It was a total.

Nobody in this hall was against anybody. There was no advantage anywhere in another candidate doing badly. There was, in fact, no such thing as another candidate doing badly that did not also happen to him, and to , and to eight billion people who would never be told.

He looked around at nine thousand of the most competitive human beings ever assembled in one place, and did not say any of it out loud.

There would have been nowhere to start.

"Wait," said, when the voice had stopped. "Wait, go back."

He was not talking to it. There was nothing to talk to. He was talking to the four or five people nearest him, catching up out loud.

"Twelve worlds and we don't get told what any of them are testing."

"No."

"And we don't get told our scores."

"We got them once," somebody said. "That was the once."

"And if enough of us are bad at it," Kai said, "then everyone at home gets a box around them forever and nobody ever tells them why."

Nobody answered that, so he said the other half of it.

"And if we're good at it, nobody tells them either."

"That's right," said the woman in the suit, who had been examined successfully for forty years and had spent the last hour finding out what that was worth. "We're not the point. We're the measurement."

Her name was . Kai had it out of her inside a minute, the way he had everybody's.

He looked at her for a second.

"Okay," he said. "Then let's be good at it."

Eleven particles of light, thought.

He had read about it standing up, on a Tuesday in April, on a second monitor he was walking past on his way to bed. Six tired people in a photograph in front of a machine. A headline he had walked past on his way to bed.

He had understood almost none of it. He remembered that clearly, because he remembered deciding to read the rest tomorrow, and he remembered that the word decoherence had appeared twice without being explained.

What he understood now was the shape of it. Empty space is not empty, and it is not inert, and if you shake it hard enough in the right way it gives you something real. In Grenoble they had done that by accident, with a machine built for something else entirely, and got eleven photons and a modest headline.

And something enormous had turned its head.

He was not frightened by this, exactly. He was a man sitting on a floor a very long way from Buffalo, working out that , and that this was the whole reason he was there.

STATED RULES ISSUED. COHORT ACKNOWLEDGMENT: NOT REQUIRED. TRANSIT TO WORLD ONE COMMENCES. CANDIDATES ARE REMINDED THAT THE ASSESSMENT HAS ALREADY BEGUN.

Proctor observation · filed, not escalated

The stated rules are read to every cohort. They have been read four hundred and eleven times and the wording has not changed in six hundred thousand years.

has never been asked to explain any part of them, which is correct, because Chalcis is not permitted to and could not.

The address covers what the assessment is, what the worlds are, what the scores do, and what happens at the end. It runs to nine minutes.

It does not say what the assessment is for. There is no line in it that does. Chalcis has read it four hundred and eleven times and has never once noticed.

The transit was nothing again.

The hall, and then not the hall. No sensation, no interval, no sense of having been moved. was sitting on a gray floor and then he was standing on grass, mid-thought, with his weight already on his feet as though somebody had asked politely and he had complied.

It was outdoors and it was morning.

There was a sky and it was blue, slightly the wrong blue. There was grass that was grass. There was a line of trees a few hundred yards off, and the trees were far too tall, and he did not yet have any idea why that mattered.

Around him, nine thousand eight hundred and twelve people stood in a field on another world in the clothes they had been taken in. They were beginning an examination that would never once tell them how they were doing.

Candidate 4,417 of 9,812 put his hands in his pockets and looked at the trees.

Stated rules issued at the usual point and in the usual wording. No candidate requested clarification, which is normal, because there is nobody to request it from.

Subject remained seated throughout, which four candidates in this cohort also did. He was not observed to react to the section on permanent enclosure. The office notes that he had already worked out both outcomes by the time the section concluded, and that the outcomes are, from the perspective of his associated parties, identical.

Subject then spent several minutes on the opening section, concerning the detection event, which candidates do not usually revisit.

Transit completed. Cohort intact at 9,812. Recommend no action.
